Butterfly car died. Last month Musicians for Peace had an event each weekend. First it was Power to the Peaceful with Michael Franti, then EarthDance, PeaceFest and finally EcoFest. On the way back from EcoFest my car died and I am trying to raise $600 to get it out of the shop. Please consider getting a copy of our Make Love Not War CD today. Details below.

Book of the Month - The Voice of the Butterfly
John Nichols's, the author of The Milagro Beanfield War, brings his vintage wit to the absurdities of modern life being challenged by an environmental butterfly liberation movement . When Suicide City's new highway bypass threatens the home of an exquisitely obscure butterfly, aging '60s radical and continuing proponent of losing battles Charley McFarland rallies an off-the-rails band of misfits to help fight the powers that be. Tthis time on behalf of the Rocky Mountain phistic copper butterfly. A dark comedy of ideals and unlikely heroes.
McFarland's dysfunctional, yet oddly grace-filled Butterfly Coalition had me laughing out loud. It made me aware once again of what activists can accomplish, usually despite ourselves. Dan Harder's play, Quartet No. 1 for Three Characters and Cello -- a Mysterious Romance, will be running for a month

Opening night is October 1 and it runs Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through October 23.
This play was a finalist in last year's Bay Area Playwright's Festival and has had five prior productions: one at the Marsh, one in Walnut Creek, a short run of the One-Act version in Salinas, and two in NYC. This time, everyone will be off-book and flying. The cello score is written by Randy Craig, cofounder of the Pickle Family Circus and general nice-guy/mad-man/genius.

The Speakers:
Safa Abu-Rabiah is a coordinator of the Bedouin Women's Empowerment Program of the New Israeli Fund and an activist with The Forum for Co-Existence Between Jews and Arabs. Educated in a Jewish high-school and in Beer-Sheva University, the daughter of a Palestinian mother and a Bedouin father, Safa will discuss the different aspects of women’s struggles in the Bedouin society and in Israel in general as well as describe women’s role in the struggle for peace and reconciliation.
Hannah Safran,PhD, is a co-founder of Coalition of Women for a Just Peace and an activist with Women in Black. As a relentless peace and social organizer in Israel and a scholar in women studies, Hannah will discuss the Israeli society, joint Israeli-Palestinian activism for reconciliation and peace, and her work to promote women’s rights for Palestinian and Israeli women.
Susan Greene, PhD, is an artist, activist and clinical psychologist. She is a member of Jews for a Free Palestine and a founding member of Break the Silence Mural Project, a group of Jewish American Women artists who, through community art projects in Occupied Palestine, work to raise awareness and critical thinking in the U.S. regarding Palestine and Israel. She recently returned from 2 months in Palestine and will share her efforts to empower youth through art.

A new documentary by local film-maker Wendy Campbell who will be in attendance. Every American should see this!
Rosa is a Palestinian refugee whose family was one of hundreds of thousands of non-Jewish Palestinians who were forced to flee their homes, their businesses, their farms and their homeland in 1948 when they created the Jewish state of Israel. Rosa shares her vivid memories of that harrowing time which still haunt her to this day in an interview with local film-maker Wendy Campbell. Americans rarely hear about the experiences that Palestinians suffered when Israel was created, and even today, Israel1s ethnic cleansing campaign funded with US tax dollars is rarely portrayed accurately in the pro-Israel US media. Shocking recent footage of the Israeli army demolishing Palestinian homes with Caterpillar machinery paid for with US tax dollars is included, showing how the Israelis have never really stopped attacking the Palestinians and stealing their land, with implicit support from the US government. Enjoy the peaceful, magnificent Inverness, California ridge top setting, overlooking the ocean with views to San Francisco. You are welcome to bring sacred objects to contribute and gather healing power in the circle, drums, rattles, or other musical instruments, a backjack, pillow or blanket for extra comfort, and a potluck snack or drink.
October 29 through Samhain/All Saints Day, November 1; 10 AM-late afternoon We will see what the Elder Spirits have in store for us for this magical season of shamanic revelation. Our time together will include filling our communal cauldron with our healing intentions and desires, calling our guiding spirits and animal powers from all the directions, drumming, rattling, singing, chanting, shamanic journeying, and crafting sacred ceremonial pieces. We are moved by the presence of these powerful spirits, hear and express their songs, music, and stories within and around us, and feel the transformational energy of their healing power.
You are welcome to bring drums, rattles, or other musical instruments, and a backjack, pillow or blanket for extra comfort. Bring a large candle that expresses your spirit, and stones, crystals, herbs, feathers, amulets, clothing, photos, totems or other sacred items to use in rituals and place on the altar and for crafting sacred ceremonial pieces. A catered vegetarian lunch will be provided.
Recommended preparation for the retreat: Shamanic journey practice, interspecies communication training, previously attending Elder Spirit gatherings.

In 1974, two FBI agents were killed in a gun battle on the Pine Ridge reservation. Leonard Peltier, a leader of the American Indian Movement (AIM) was falsely convicted of the murders, although critical evidence proved his innocence. Peltier's arrest and trial were politically motivated shams. This exciting documentary reconstructs events surrounding the incident, highlighting the overwhelming FBI repression and atmosphere of government terror on the reservation.
